An Unwavering Tale of Tea…

Among the misty hills of Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa region, lies and iconic city famed for being the pinnacle of the world’s most exotic gems. Fashioned from the words ` Ratna ’for gems and ‘Pura’ for city, the metropolis Ratnapura is also home to another more unique and delectable jewel cultivated throughout a period of more than a 100 years – Ceylon Tea.

Incomparable to teas grown in any other region of the world, Ceylon tea has been the pioneer in the world’s most elite tea circles. This is precisely due to the unique climatic conditions in Sri Lanka, its fertile terrain & soil which give it the unique characteristics that sets it apart in taste, aroma and colors.

Sam’s tea journey

Our story begins with an ambitious young civil engineer from the city of Ratnapura. Sam Liyanage graduated from the University of North East London to peruse a career as a successful civil engineer at WS Atkins and Partners in Epsom, London. Although his life was comfortable in England, he constantly felt the pull towards where his roots were, and to serve the people of the locality he grew up in. In 1982, he took the first step that defined him as an entrepreneur - the risk to divert away from stable employment. He moved with his young family back to Sri Lanka and after a decade of hard work, determination, ups and downs, resilience and wit, Sam succeeded with his brainchild Falcon Tea Factory. Sam firmly believed in growing, and helping the growth of his community too. From its inception in 1995, the tea company has continuously worked to make the livelihood of its stakeholders better. Today, it manufactures some of the world’s most coveted ranges of single origin black tea, manufactured with exceptional precision and quality control mechanisms. Its flagship brand Arimbu Premium Ceylon Tea is the face that takes this wonderful beverage into the global market. Producing 1500 tons of tea annually, all teas leave the factory after rigorous reviewing from its expert team of tea sommeliers, promising you a taste of Ceylon’s best single origin teas

Sam’s Philosophy

With the successful growth of the tea factory, Sam quickly began to identify ways in which he could give back to the community. A firm believer in the quote ‘what we do for ourselves die with us, what we do for others’ lives eternally’; his philanthropical mind fathered the Employee home building project. This identified employees who were in need of immediate home renovations or basic housing needs. Each year Sam identified an employee suitable to get a home that was fully furnished, with all essentials intact. With the successful initiation of the home building project, Sam quickly identified other needs of his factory workers, and set up initiatives to make their livelihoods prosper. He extended these benefits to all his green leaf suppliers too, ensuring that the benefits were shared among the full community. Some of the most popular (but few of the many) projects include:

Tea beginnings

Sri Lanka, more popularly known in relation to tea as Ceylon, was a British colony for 150 years. In 1867, James Taylor, known to date as the father of Ceylon tea, identified the country’s potential for unique, flavorsome tea. The weather, elevation and soil fertility fuelled the exclusivity of Ceylon tea’s liquor and aroma, making it synonymous with finest quality world over.

Our legacy

Our humble beginnings pioneered in the year 1995, with the establishment of our parent company Falcon Tea Factory, where all the magic happens to bring you great tasting aromatic tea. With the passion to craft finest Ceylon tea, this venture blossomed into an internationally renowned company, revered for its exquisite blends and unwavering commitment to quality.

Our individuality

Our tea leaves are handpicked daily by our small leaf farmers. Once collected, the green leaf gets transported to the factory punctually in specially designed trucks. Once at the factory, all green leaf is processed under strict hygienic conditions and quality controls. All tea manufactured at our facility signifies premium quality and good practices.

PRODUCTIVITY

Our factory produces “Low grown” teas where the unique characteristics are the darkness of the leaf and the strength of the brew. This is due to the distinctive nature of the soil and groundwater in this region, as well as the plantation and the technical inputs of our experienced planters. At the final stage, specialist tea tasters, who count many decades of experience in this field, carry out blending. The result is a distinctive taste, bouquet, and aroma, unlike any other. We currently export our teas in bulk to Middle East, Europe and Russia.

QUALITY

We place the utmost priority on quality from the moment the leaves are plucked, till they reach their final destination. In this regard, we have obtained ISO 22000, Ethical Tea Partnership and have been awarded the One Star in the Ceylon Tea Quality Certificate Quality Management System. With all these guide lines in our processes, we want to streamline operations, improving quality, enhancing productivity and providing our staff with a better working environment.
